The 28oz Shaker Bottle That Held 22oz: How Capacity Labeling Works and Why It Matters for Retail

A protein supplement brand I work with ran into a return problem that took a while to diagnose. Their 28oz shaker bottle, which they’d positioned at the top of their product line, was generating a steady stream of complaints about insufficient capacity. Customers said they couldn’t fit a full serving of protein powder plus the recommended liquid amount without the bottle being too full to shake properly. The brand’s nutrition label recommended 12oz of liquid per serving. The bottle measured 28oz on the spec sheet. The math looked fine.

The math wasn’t fine, because 28oz on the spec sheet meant something different from 28oz of usable shaking capacity.

When I measured the bottle against the complaint pattern, the issue was clear: the bottle held 28oz filled to the brim, but a shaker bottle filled to the brim can’t be shaken without liquid forcing through the lid seal. The functional maximum fill for shaking — leaving enough air space for the contents to move and the mixer ball to operate — was closer to 22oz. At that fill level, the bottle couldn’t accommodate 12oz of liquid plus two scoops of powder plus ice without overflowing.

The brand had bought a 28oz bottle. Their customers had received what was effectively a 22oz shaker.

What Brim Capacity and Working Capacity Mean

Every container has two capacity measurements that are almost never both stated on a product specification sheet.

Brim capacity is the total internal volume — how much liquid the bottle holds when filled to the very top. This is the number factories default to when you ask for capacity, because it’s the largest number and the easiest to measure. It’s also nearly useless for evaluating a shaker bottle.

Working capacity is how much liquid the bottle can actually contain while still functioning as intended — with the lid closed and the contents able to move freely during shaking. For a shaker bottle, working capacity is typically 75-85% of brim capacity, depending on the internal geometry and lid design.

The difference matters most in large sizes. At a 20oz bottle, the gap between brim capacity and working capacity might be 4oz — annoying but not a product-defining issue. At a 32oz bottle, the gap can be 6-8oz, which is the difference between a bottle that can accommodate a full double-scoop serving with adequate liquid and one that can’t without overflowing.

Most shaker bottle manufacturers list brim capacity. Most consumers interpret stated capacity as working capacity. The gap between those two assumptions is where the complaints come from.

Why Working Capacity Varies More Than Brim Capacity

Two shaker bottles with identical brim capacities can have significantly different working capacities depending on their internal geometry.

Bottle shape is the primary variable. A cylinder with straight walls has a consistent cross-section from top to bottom, which means liquid fills predictably and working capacity is a straightforward percentage of brim capacity. A bottle with a tapered or curved profile — wider at the base, narrower at the lid — has more volume near the bottom where the liquid settles and less near the lid where the air space is. This geometry allows a larger working capacity as a percentage of brim capacity, because the air space is concentrated at the narrowest part of the bottle where it takes up less absolute volume.

Lid design affects working capacity independently of the bottle shape. A flip-top lid with a spout extends the internal chamber slightly, which changes the effective air space calculation. An integrated lid where the wire loop or handle takes up internal space reduces working capacity at the same brim volume. These details don’t appear on spec sheets, but they affect how full the bottle feels in use and whether customers feel the capacity matches what they expected.

The mixer ball itself takes up space. A standard coil mixer ball in a 28oz bottle occupies roughly 1-2oz of volume at rest — not much, but it’s volume that liquid displaces when the bottle is filled. When the ball is moving during shaking, it requires clearance at the top of the fluid column. Bottles designed with mixing mechanics in mind account for this in their internal geometry; bottles designed around brim capacity numbers don’t.

The Retail Pricing Implication

Working capacity is what the end consumer experiences, which means it’s what the retail price is implicitly promising. A 28oz shaker bottle positioned at a premium price point is promising a certain user experience — enough capacity for a substantial serving with room to shake. If the working capacity is 21oz, the product isn’t delivering on that promise regardless of what the spec sheet says.

This creates a pricing misalignment that shows up in reviews rather than returns. A customer who buys a 28oz bottle, finds it too small for their use case, and doesn’t bother returning it will leave a review that says the bottle is smaller than expected. Enough of those reviews and the product’s positioning becomes a liability: “premium 28oz shaker” with reviews that say “feels more like 20oz” is a hard product to defend at the price point.

When sourcing bulk shaker bottles for a retail channel where size is part of the value proposition, I ask for both brim capacity and working capacity explicitly, and I specify working capacity as the contractually binding number. If the factory only knows brim capacity, I measure working capacity myself: fill the bottle to the brim, pour off liquid until the bottle can be shaken vigorously for fifteen seconds without liquid escaping the lid, and measure what’s left. That’s the working capacity.

The Standardization Problem

The absence of working capacity as a standard specification in the industry creates a second-order problem: it’s impossible to compare bottles from different suppliers on the number that actually matters to consumers.

A buyer comparing a 28oz bottle from Factory A with a 28oz bottle from Factory B on specification sheets is comparing brim capacities. If Factory A’s bottle has a working capacity of 24oz and Factory B’s has a working capacity of 20oz, those are fundamentally different products for the end user — but they look identical in a spec comparison.

I’ve started maintaining a working capacity test log for every shaker bottle sample I evaluate. The test takes five minutes, and the results are often surprising. Bottles from reputable suppliers with well-designed geometry consistently hit 80-85% of brim capacity as working capacity. Bottles optimized for maximum stated capacity at minimum material cost sometimes hit 70% or less. The difference is invisible from the spec sheet and highly visible to the end customer.

What to Ask Before the Order

Three questions I now ask before placing a shaker bottle order that didn’t occur to me when I was relying on spec sheets:

What is the fill line? Some bottles have a maximum fill indicator molded or printed on the interior. If it exists, measure the volume at that line — it’s the factory’s own statement of working capacity. If it doesn’t exist, the factory hasn’t thought about working capacity as a spec at all.

What is the mixer ball clearance height? The gap between the maximum fill level and the underside of the lid needs to be enough for the mixer ball to complete a full circuit during shaking. A clearance of less than an inch typically means the ball contacts the lid on the upstroke, which reduces mixing effectiveness and adds noise and wear to the lid underside.

Can you fill it with the product formula it’s going to be used with? For supplement brands whose shaker bottle is sold or bundled with a specific product, the test isn’t abstract — it’s whether the bottle can hold one full serving of that product, prepared according to the label instructions, with enough room to shake. A factory that supports this test is one that’s confident in their product. One that doesn’t is telling you something.

The supplement brand I mentioned at the start replaced their 28oz bottle with a bottle that had a 32oz brim capacity and a 28oz working capacity, relabeled it at 28oz, and the complaints stopped. The lesson wasn’t that they needed a bigger bottle. It was that they needed to know what size they actually had before they told customers what size they were buying.
